How many shingles are in a bundle?
A standard 3-tab asphalt shingle bundle contains 29 shingles (12" × 36") and covers ~33.3 sq ft. You need 3 bundles per roofing square (100 sq ft).
What is a "roofing square"?
A roofing square equals 100 square feet. Contractors price roofs in squares, not square feet — e.g., "a 25-square roof" = 2500 sq ft.
How many bundles for a 2000 sq ft roof?
2000 sq ft = 20 squares × 3 bundles/square = 60 bundles. Add 10-15% for waste (cuts, ridge caps, hips, valleys) = roughly 69 bundles.
Does roof pitch affect material quantity?
Yes. A steeper pitch increases actual roof surface area vs ground footprint. Use a pitch multiplier: 4/12 pitch = ×1.054, 6/12 = ×1.118, 8/12 = ×1.202, 12/12 = ×1.414.
