How this calculator works

Drywall comes in standard sheets: 1200×2400 mm (2.88 m²), 1200×2700 mm (3.24 m²), or 1200×3000 mm (3.6 m²). Divide total area by sheet area, add 10% wastage, and round up.

For every sheet, budget: 32 drywall screws (1¼"), 4 m joint tape, 1 m² joint compound.

Drywall calculator FAQ

How many drywall sheets do I need for a 12x12 room?

A 12×12 room with 8ft ceilings has 4 walls of 96 sq ft each (384 sq ft) plus a 144 sq ft ceiling = 528 sq ft total. Using 4×8 sheets (32 sq ft each), that's ~17 sheets, plus 10% waste = 19 sheets.

How much joint compound (mud) do I need per sheet?

Budget about 1 lb of joint compound per 4×8 sheet, or roughly 0.053 lb/sq ft of drywall. For quick-setting mud, plan for 0.073 lb/sq ft.

How many drywall screws per sheet?

For 16-inch stud spacing, you need ~32 screws per 4×8 sheet (one every 12 inches on the perimeter, and every 16 inches on intermediate studs).

What's the difference between 4x8, 4x10, and 4x12 sheets?

Larger sheets mean fewer seams to tape and mud, which is faster and cleaner. 4×12 is common for commercial work. 4×8 is the default for residential — easier to handle solo.
